Employers Must Do More
to Protect Staff
TUC - 26 February, 2007
In advance of Mesothelioma Action Day tomorrow (Tuesday), the TUC
is calling on employers to protect workers against the terrible
disease which kills over 2,000 people every year.
Although the supply and use of asbestos has now been banned in
the UK, it is still found in an estimated one and a half million
workplaces. Many employers do not even know it is are there. As
a result, maintenance and other workers can be exposed if they work
in areas where asbestos is present, often ripping out or drilling
into material containing asbestos and breathing in the potentially
fatal fibres.
However this exposure can be prevented if employers simply obey
the law and find out if there is asbestos on their premises, says
the TUC. Then they can make sure that it is clearly marked to prevent
anyone working on or near the dangerous material. Damaged asbestos
material should always be removed.
Unfortunately this is not happening, and there are currently insufficient
safety inspectors in the UK to make sure that every employer has
checked for asbestos. This means that thousands of maintenance,
building and demolition workers are being put at unnecessary risk.
To help prevent this the TUC has got together with the Health and
Safety Executive to produce guidance for union safety representatives
on how to keep workplaces safe from asbestos.
Nigel Costley, the South West TUC's Regional Secretary, said: 'No
worker's life should be put at risk by employers who just cannot
be bothered to get a simple survey done. We urge all safety representatives
to make sure that their workplace has been checked, and that proper
control measures are in place, including providing information and
training to both staff and any contractors on asbestos."

LAUSD
adopt DustBubbles into building maintenance procedures
The Los Angeles Unified School District have just made the DustBubble
an integral part of the building maintenance program. After testing
both the standard and industrial DustBubbles for over 18 months,
they have adopted both products into their standard operating procedure
for regular building maintenance and the industrial DustBubbles
where hazardous materials are known to be present. We are most grateful
for the faith shown in DustBubble by the head of the Asbestos Technical
Unit at LAUSD, Mr Rick Henry.
Safety Products and Technology Weekly
'Contaminated Dust Meets Its Maker'
Feature Article
July 19, 2006
There could be contaminated dust in them "thar" holes
in the wall. That's why the innovative DustBubble was invented. There's
nothing super high-tech about this product, which is really a disposable
dust collector for drills. But the key is what it controls - the
release of airborne hazardous materials.
The DustBubble is a circular piece of plastic that is taped to
the wall and drilled into. The action of the drill is what collects
the dust in a reservoir. Once the mini-bag is filled it can be safely
discarded without the material being disturbed. The bag is capable
of capturing asbestos, lead-based paint, silica, mold and other
hazardous waste. It can also capture hot metal debris. This product
is completely transparent so you can see what you're drilling. While
hands-free, you can even drill at an angle. At the end of the day,
there is no emptying, cleaning or decontaminating. The special engineering
DustBubble uses a combination of aerospace industry metal coolant
and a tough, heat resistant composite material. This allows it to
capture hot metal shards. In addition, a wetting agent (gel) inserted
in the bag helps suppress airborne contamination.
The DustBubble has been successfully tested by the Health and Safety
Executive (HSE) in the UK. It tested the product on a piece of asbestos
fiberboard and recorded only a minute quantity of airborne contamination.
"When used correctly DustBubble is very efficient at collecting
and retaining debris from drilling and significantly reduces airborne
fiber releases," the HSE laboratory concluded.
The Contamination Control DustBubble kit provides contamination-free
drilling during building maintenance work. The kit contains 50 strong
and heat-resistant industrial DustBubbles, gel wetting agent, secondary
bags, pads for rough wall applications, an approved asbestos waste
bag and a full procedure. The industrial DustBubbles are available
separately in packs of 100.
DRAGON'S
DEN
Many of you will be
visiting this web site after seeing me roughed up on the BBC2 program
Dragon's Den. Well, as the producers tell you before you go on,
"just remember it's an entertainment show!
As for the pitch, see the story
above!
DustBubble has previously featured
on What's the Big Idea, Best Inventions, Big Strong Boys, QVC, HGTV
in the US and we are told a number of other DIY programs (its hard
to watch them all). They were all a little bit more encouraging
however!
Dubai
International Air Show, Nov 20th - 24th
AVDel
(India) Ltd demonstrated our Engineering DustBubbles for aerospace
applications at the Dubai International Air Show, stand W 500(M)
of the INDIAN PAVILION. AVDEL
are our exclusive distributors in the Indian sub continent and supply
industrial DustBubbles to the aircraft maintenance industry and
Space Satellite Centres in India.
Rowley
Drapery Supplies
Rowley Co are leading US wholsellers of drapery supplies
and will be stocking stocks of our consumer DustBubble products
very soon. The making and instalation of window treatments is where
the safety advantages of DustBubble are easily seen. Curtains rails
are fitted high up in furnished rooms and when drilling holes dust
is easily spread accross the whole room unless contained. Drilling
into a wall on a step ladder is also potentially dangerous so holding
a hardware device or a heavy drill with extraction attachments at
the same time only makes this more difficult. The DustBubble is
a hands free device which makes it safer to use.
DustBubbles
in Focus
The third largest DIY retailer in the UK will be
selling the full DustBubble range of DIY DustBubbles in packs of

and Interiors Exhibition at the SECC in Glasgow on the 3rd to 5th
of September. Technoglass are frequent DustBubble users in all of
their instalation work and very nice people too.

loves a freebie!
New industrial
customer in US
The power supplier US National Grid became our first
US industrial client after the Contamination Control DustBubble
Kit launched in California at AIHce. Industrial hygienist Paul J.
Webb said "I've done some preliminary exposure assessments
with the DustBubble and it appears to completely contain asbestos
fibers as well as other dust from drilling. You have a great product
and I anticipate that it will be very well received here in the
States".
American
Industrial Hygiene Expo launch
DustBubble launched our industrial products at the
American Industrial Hygiene Expo in May. The Contamination Control
and Engineering DustBubble Kits were demonstrated throughout the
4 days by Nick Noble and our US industrial distributor Chris McManus
from Segull Security Inc.
